چکیده

Armed Conflict and Schooling: Evidence from the 1994 Rwandan Genocide To examine the impact of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide on children’s schooling, the authors combine two cross-sectional household surveys collected before and after the genocide. The identification strategy uses pre-war data to control for an age group’s baseline schooling and exploits variation across provinces in the intensity of killings and which children’s cohorts were school-aged when exposed to the war. The findings show a strong negative impact of the genocide on schooling, with exposed children completing one-half year less education representing an 18.3 percent decline. The effect is robust to including control variables, alternative sources for genocide intensity, and an instrumental variables strategy. JEL Classification: I20, J13, O12, O15

Armed Conflict and Domestic Violence: Evidence from Rwanda

The 1994 Rwandan genocide deeply affected the structure of the population by decreasing the sex ratio, the relative number of men and women. In addition, those living in urban areas with an educated background were more likely to be killed during the mass slaying, which resulted in a loss of human capital (De Walque and Verwimp, 2010). This study uses data from the 2005 Rwanda Demographic and H...

This article traces the rise of humanitarian interventionist ideas in the US from 1991 to 2003. Until 1997, humanitarian intervention was a relatively limited affair, conceived ad hoc more than systematically, prioritized below multilateralism, aiming to relieve suffering without transforming foreign polities. For this reason, US leaders and citizens scarcely contemplated armed intervention in ...

Our goal in the present study was to investig...

War and the Destruction of Human Capital

Our paper introduces a methodology to estimate the effect of war on the stock of human capital by examining the changes in the presence of educated people after the Rwanda genocide. We find that the genocide reduced the stock of human capital in Rwanda s...

The Economic Effects of Political Violence: Evidence from the Genocide in Rwanda

Studies on the economic consequences of internal political violence typically find negative short-run effects that are not very large, and no evidence for full economic recovery. We study the impact of the Rwandan genocide in 1994 on economic development using the synthetic control method. We find a 58 percent decrease in GDP in 1994, and strong evidence that Rwanda’s economy was then catching ...
